A New Chapter in Noida-NCR Transport Development

After Metro and Rapid Rail, Now Comes Light Rail: A New Chapter in Noida-NCR Transport Development

Noida-NCR’s transport infrastructure is set to witness a significant upgrade with the introduction of the Light Rail Transit System (LRTS). Following Metro, Rapid Rail, and Mono Rail, this ambitious project aims to connect the Noida International Airport, Yamuna Expressway, and Film City seamlessly.

What is the Light Rail Transit System Plan?

The proposed Light Rail system will be integrated with the Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS). This innovative project was discussed and approved in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) board meeting. The primary goal is to establish a fast, affordable, and convenient travel link between the Noida International Airport and Film City through a 14-kilometer route.

Earlier Proposal for Pod Taxis

Initially, the plan was to connect this route with Pod Taxis. In 2021, a blueprint was created for a 14-kilometer stretch with 12 stations at an estimated cost of ₹641.5 crore. However, a comparative study between Pod Taxis and Light Rail was later conducted, and Light Rail was deemed a more practical solution by experts and officials.

Three Services on a Single Track: Metro, Rapid Rail, and Light Rail

A unique feature of this project is the shared track system for Metro, Rapid Rail, and Light Rail. According to YEIDA CEO Arun Vir Singh:

  • Metro trains will operate every 3.5 minutes.
  • Rapid Rail will run every 7 minutes.
  • Light Rail will be available at an 8-minute interval.

The project has already been approved by the Uttar Pradesh government and is now awaiting approval from the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

Why Light Rail Over Pod Taxis?

Experts have highlighted several advantages of the Light Rail system over Pod Taxis:

  • Higher Capacity: Light Rail can accommodate more passengers compared to Pod Taxis.
  • Lower Maintenance Costs: The infrastructure and operation of Light Rail are more cost-effective.
  • Environment-Friendly: It is energy-efficient and has a smaller carbon footprint.

The Future of Transport in Noida-NCR

The Light Rail project is expected to revolutionize commuting in Noida-NCR by reducing travel time and promoting regional development. It will also provide a modern transport system to the area, catering to the needs of both local residents and visitors.

Conclusion

The Light Rail Transit System marks a significant step towards modernizing urban transport in Noida-NCR. By integrating Metro, Rapid Rail, and Light Rail on a single track, this project promises to enhance connectivity, boost economic growth, and create new employment opportunities in the region. Once operational, it is set to become a cornerstone in the region’s urban development and transport planning.
